As PR pros, most of us studied some genre of communications in school, and for many of us that meant taking journalist classes as well. While fine-tuning our writing skills and being hyper-aware of fact errors are important to building our PR skills, there’s nothing like actually stepping outside of the classroom and into a journalist’s shoes. Many PR professionals started as news reporters, including some PAN veterans- Mike Sullivan, Mike O’Connell, Andy Baron to name a few. But many of us, like me, left the classroom and jumped right into the whirlwind that is public relations. Last week, I had the opportunity to step outside of my PR boundaries and write an article for a local newspaper.
